In a highly anticipated move, Honda Motors Europe unveiled the 2024 CRF1100L Africa Twin and CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports on October 4, 2023. Enthusiasts and riders have been abuzz with speculation about these new models, and the official release did not disappoint, bringing substantial changes and enhancements to both versions.

Engine Upgrades

One of the standout improvements is in the heart of these adventure motorcycles—the engine. The beloved 1,084cc parallel twin engine remains at the core, assuring continuity in the iconic Africa Twin performance.

However, Honda has undertaken significant tweaks for the 2024 models. Riders can now enjoy a boost in torque, with 112Nm now available at 5,500 rpm, a substantial improvement compared to the previous iteration that required reaching 6,250 rpm for peak torque.

These enhancements extend beyond torque, with Honda adjusting the compression ratio to 10.5:1, fine-tuning valve timing, optimizing intake ports, and refining the engine control unit (ECU) settings for an overall performance upgrade. These modifications apply across the entire 2024 CRF1100L Africa Twin lineup.

Suspension and Handling

Honda has democratized technology by extending the Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (EERA) semi-active suspension, previously reserved for the Adventure Sports model, to the standard Africa Twin for 2024.

Additionally, tubeless Metzeler Karoo Street tires now come standard, promising improved on-road performance. A larger and five-way-adjustable windscreen, as well as a redesigned front fairing, further enhance the riding experience.

Seat height options range from 835mm to 855mm and an optional low seat accessory can further reduce it to 795mm. It’s worth noting that the seat height for the standard 2024 Africa Twin remains unchanged.

Color and Features

The 2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin will be available in Grand Prix Red and Matt Ballistic Black Metallic. Opting for the Africa Twin with Showa EERA provides riders with additional choices of Pearl Glare White and Glint Wave Blue Metallic Tricolor, accompanied by heated grips and a standard accessory socket.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports offers two distinct color options: Matt Ballistic Black Metallic or Pearl Glare White Tricolor.

The highly anticipated 2023 Japan Mobility Show, scheduled to run from October 28 to November 5, 2023, in Tokyo, is set to captivate attendees with cutting-edge mobility solutions from prominent automakers.

  • Following Honda’s revelation of their offerings for the event in late September 2023, it was Suzuki’s turn on October 3, 2023, to unveil their diverse and intriguing lineup.
  • At the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, Suzuki intends to make a resounding impact by showcasing a broad spectrum of vehicles, including two-wheeled and four-wheeled models, as well as several other pioneering projects.

In the realm of two-wheeled vehicles, Suzuki will introduce three world premiere innovations. The first of these is the “e-PO,” a folding electric moped developed in collaboration with Panasonic.

Designed to provide users with an enhanced electric mobility experience akin to an electric assist bicycle, the e-PO offers three operational modes: Full electric drive, Assist drive, and Pedal drive. This versatile moped is engineered to provide a safe and efficient means of transportation, particularly suitable for use on highways.

In another joint endeavor between Suzuki and Panasonic, the 2023 Japan Mobility Show will witness the introduction of an electric scooter, reminiscent of Suzuki’s 50cc Choinori gas-powered scooter, which gained popularity in the early 2000s.

This electric scooter, equipped with a motor originally designed for electric assist bicycles, is tailored for urban travel, emphasizing sustainability and convenience.

Suzuki’s commitment to exploring alternative energy sources is underscored by the unveiling of their inaugural hydrogen-powered two-wheeler. Although categorized as a test vehicle, this represents a significant leap in Suzuki’s hydrogen engine development endeavors.

An interactive display featuring a cutaway view of the test vehicle, incorporating a 70-megapascal (MPa) hydrogen tank and engine, will provide insights into Suzuki’s progress in this pioneering field. Additionally, Suzuki will host informative panels and presentations to elucidate their advancements in hydrogen engine technology.

The 2023 Japan Mobility Show will also feature the e-Burgman, a vehicle that Suzuki initiated demonstration experiments with in April 2023. In an exciting revelation for motorcycle enthusiasts and eco-conscious riders, Kawasaki has officially introduced its inaugural electric motorcycle models, the 2024 Ninja e-1 and Z e-1, marking a significant foray into the realm of electric mobility within the United States.

Design and Performance

Visually, the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 seamlessly blend with the distinctive design language associated with their respective lineages, maintaining the iconic styling cues of their Ninja and Z families.

Beneath their striking exteriors, both motorcycles are equipped with a 5-kilowatt (approximately 6.7 horsepower) interior permanent magnet synchronous electric motor capable of delivering a peak power output of 9 kW (about 12 hp).

 

Furthermore, these electric bikes incorporate regenerative energy during deceleration, an attribute common among electric motorcycles, eliminating the need for a clutch.

Battery and Charging

Powering the 2024 Kawasaki Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 are two removable 30 amp-hour battery packs, offering riders convenience and versatility. Charging these batteries can be achieved through three distinct methods: direct connection to a standard household outlet, utilization of a dedicated docking station, or plugging the bike itself with the batteries in place.

A full recharge of each battery pack is estimated to take approximately 3.7 hours. Additionally, a separate 12-volt battery supplies power to the lights and instrument cluster, mirroring the conventional setup found in combustion-engine motorcycles.

Range and Performance

Kawasaki provides an estimated range of 72km on a single charge for both models, taking into account usage in Road mode without engaging the e-Boost feature. It is important to note that real-world range can vary due to factors such as rider weight, wind conditions, terrain, and riding style.

Chassis and Handling

Both the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 feature a familiar steel trellis frame design and share common suspension components. The front suspension comprises a 41mm telescopic fork with 119mm of travel, while the rear utilizes a bottom-link Uni-Trak setup offering 132mm of travel and four-way adjustable preload.

Braking systems consist of single two-piston calipers on both front and rear wheels, with the primary distinction being the size of the discs. Both motorcycles are equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels and feature standard ABS for enhanced safety.

Dimensions and Weight

The Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 exhibit similar dimensions, including a 1,365mm wheelbase, 1,980mm length, 170mm ground clearance, and a seat height of 785mm. Also these electric bikes share a rake of 24.4 degrees and a trail of 94mm.

However, differences emerge in terms of width, height, and curb weight. The Ninja e-1 measures 686mm in width and 1,105mm in height, weighing in at 140kg.

Conversely, the Z e-1 boasts dimensions of 730mm in width and 1,035mm in height, with a lighter curb weight of 135kg.

 

Power Modes and e-Boost

Both models provide riders with two power modes, Eco and Road, catering to different riding scenarios. Eco mode prioritizes range by offering a gentler power response and electronically limiting the top speed to 60km/h, while Road mode is tailored for everyday use, allowing a top speed of 80km/h.

Furthermore, an e-Boost function is available in both modes, temporarily granting extra power for improved acceleration and a higher top speed. This feature elevates the top speed to approximately 85km/h in Road mode and 60km/h in Eco mode, albeit for a limited duration of 15 seconds to prevent overheating.

Walk Mode and Connectivity

To simplify parking maneuvers, Kawasaki has integrated a Walk Mode as a standard feature on both the Ninja e-1 and Z e-1. This mode enables controlled movement at low speeds, with a maximum forward speed of approximately 4.8km/h and a reverse speed of around 2.9km/h.

Both motorcycles are equipped with a 4.3-inch TFT color display, offering customizable light and dark modes. Additionally, riders can enjoy seamless Bluetooth connectivity with their smartphones through Kawasaki’s Rideology the App.

Storage

The Ninja e-1 and Z e-1 feature a compact front trunk (frunk) in the space traditionally occupied by a fuel tank in combustion-engine motorcycles.

Additionally, there is a small underseat storage area capable of accommodating items such as a U-lock and housing the adapter for direct wall charger connection.

Pricing in the US

According to Kawasaki USA, the Ninja e-1 is priced at USD7,599 (RM36k) while the Z e-1 starts at USD7,299 (RM34k).

The new enhancements includes updated Brembo Stylema radial monoblock calipers and suspension with enhanced adjustability, new and revised intake and exhaust headers for a broader torque spread, improved styling details with new slimline LED indicators and compact LED taillight and enhanced touring capabilities with optional high screen and rugged luggage system.

Both the Scrambler 1200 X and XE are powered by Triumph’s high-power 1200cc Bonneville engine, delivering torque-rich performance and an unmistakable Scrambler tone. Peak power arrives earlier in the rev range, reaching 89hp @ 7,000rpm with peak torque of 110 Nm @ 4,250rpm.

In a much-anticipated reveal on October 3, 2023, Ducati introduced the world to the 2024 Ducati DesertX Rally—a formidable off-road motorcycle designed to elevate the riding experience for enthusiasts.

Building upon the already impressive DesertX, the 2024 Rally edition brings a host of enhancements, notably in suspension and wheel technology, catering to the demands of serious enduro riders.

A Powerhouse Under the Hood

At the heart of the 2024 Ducati DesertX Rally is Ducati’s robust 937cc Testastretta 11-degree engine. This powerhouse boasts a claimed output of 110hp @ 9,250 rpm and 92Nm @ 6,500 rpm, ensuring an exhilarating off-road experience.

Suspension Enhancements

One of the standout features of the DesertX Rally is its upgraded suspension system. The front suspension now boasts a 48mm KYB closed-cartridge fork, complete with adjustable compression and rebound settings.

Meticulous engineering has been employed to minimize cavitation, utilizing a closed-cartridge design, while friction is reduced through Kashima coating on the fork tubes and a diamond-like coating (DLC) on the sliders.

At the rear, a KYB shock absorber with a 46mm piston offers adjustable compression at high and low speeds, as well as preload and rebound adjustability.

These improvements translate to impressive suspension travel—250mm up front and 240mm at the rear. The bike offers a substantial ground clearance of 280mm.

To further enhance control, an adjustable Öhlins steering damper has been integrated into the handlebar, working in harmony with the upgraded suspension system.

Wheels and Tires

The DesertX Rally sees a significant transformation in its wheel technology. Billet aluminum hubs anchor the robust carbon steel spokes, which radiate outward to lightweight Excel Takasago rims.

These wheels collectively shed 0.5 kilograms of unsprung weight compared to the stock DesertX wheels. The wheel setup comprises a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel, all wrapped in high-performance Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR rubber.

Additional Features

Ducati has not overlooked the finer details of the 2024 DesertX Rally. The bike now features a high front mudguard, equipped with a split brake line to accommodate relocation.

In response to growing concerns over the misuse of emergency lanes by motorists during heavy rainfall, authorities have issued a stern warning against illegal parking or stopping in these lanes. The directive was conveyed by the highway operator, Prolintas, via their official Twitter account.

With heavy rainfalls being a common occurrence in Malaysia, the message is clear: emergency lanes are designated for critical situations and emergency vehicles only. Parking or stopping in these lanes for any reason other than emergencies is not only illegal but also poses serious risks to other road users.

Prolintas, in their tweet, underscored the severity of the matter by highlighting the potential consequences for those found guilty of such actions. Offenders could face a hefty maximum fine of RM2,000 or even a prison sentence of up to 6 months.

The primary purpose of emergency lanes on highways is to ensure a clear and unobstructed pathway for emergency vehicles during critical situations such as accidents or medical emergencies. However, there have been instances where drivers have been using these lanes as a means to escape traffic congestion or for non-emergency reasons.
