Autoliv, a leading automotive safety company, has unveiled its revolutionary motorcycle airbag system, bringing hope for increased rider safety on the roads.

  • Autoliv set to introduce on-bike airbags soon.
  • the system works similarly to those used in modern cars.

In an exclusive interview with CycleWorld, Atsushi Ishii, Autoliv’s head of technology for mobile safety solutions, shed light on the cutting-edge project and the company’s vision for this life-saving technology.

The system’s components closely resemble those used in modern cars, comprising a crash sensor, detection Electronic Control Unit (ECU), harness, and airbag module. However, adapting these elements to motorcycles presented a unique challenge. Unlike cars with a crash deformation cell to absorb impact, motorcycles lack this feature, demanding exceptionally rapid triggering algorithms for the airbag.

Mounted below the handlebars, the motorcycle airbag utilizes an electrically-triggered chemical reaction to inflate swiftly, resembling the mechanisms found in car airbags. Currently, the focus of Autoliv’s airbag deployment is on scenarios where a car pulls out in front of a motorcycle, a common accident type with significant potential for safety improvements.

Addressing concerns about the limited use-case scenarios, Ishii emphasized that starting with the most common crash cases, even if they only account for 10% of all incidents, is crucial for saving lives.

He compared the evolution of car airbags, which initially were only on the steering wheel but now extend to various areas, providing comprehensive protection. Similarly, Autoliv envisions its motorcycle airbag technology to expand to other accident types like side impacts, lowsides, highsides, and more, eventually encompassing a broad range of crash scenarios.

During a showcase at EICMA, a motorcycle manufacturer questioned the pursuit of this technology, citing its limited applicability. Ishii’s response underscored the significance of saving lives, stating that while it may not cover all accidents, for those riders involved in head-on collisions, the airbag system could be the difference between life and death.

Autoliv’s commitment to rider safety is evident as they embark on this pioneering journey. By starting with scenarios offering the most immediate safety gains and gradually expanding to other crash types, the company aims to enhance motorcycle safety significantly.

Ducati has been dominating the adventure motorcycle segment with its popular Multistrada lineup.

  • With over 100,000 units sold, the Multistrada has been the bikemaker’s crowning glory and remains its best-selling motorcycle in 2023.
  • The Multistrada V4 continue to be the firm’s most popular motorcycle since it’s introduction.

Given this resounding triumph, it comes as no surprise that Ducati plans to further expand its Multistrada offerings in 2024. Recently, the company confirmed its intentions by filing trademarks for two new models in the United States.

These motorcycles are set to be high-spec variants of the existing adventure bikes, and enthusiasts are eager to learn more.

One of the anticipated releases is the Ducati Multistrada V4 Grand Tour for the 2024 model year. Having received certification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB), this adventure-packed motorcycle promises to deliver a thrilling experience for riders.

Drawing inspiration from its predecessor, the 2020 Multistrada 1260 S Grand Tour, the V4 Grand Tour is expected to come equipped with practical features such as hard saddlebags, auxiliary lights, a center stand, and new saddles.

On top of that, riders can anticipate an array of creature comforts, including a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), electronic gas cap, heated grips, and keyless ignition.

Ducati is likely to adopt a similar approach to the 2024 Multistrada Grand Tour, building on the existing V4 S model by adding the missing elements that distinguish it from its standard counterpart. The addition of these premium features, coupled with a bespoke colorway for enhanced exclusivity, promises to make the Grand Tour a truly coveted adventure motorcycle.

Nevertheless, the Multistrada V4 Grand Tour is set to retain its powerhouse performance, maintaining the formidable Granturismo 1,158cc V4 engine capable of delivering 170hp @ 10,500rpm and 125Nm @ 8,750rpm via h a six-speed gearbox.

Similarly, riders can rely on a wide range of advanced rider aids, including various ride modes, power modes, wheelie control, radar-guided cruise control, and traction control.

Ducati enthusiasts can also rest assured that the suspension will remain unchanged, with the bike featuring 50mm USD forks and a monoshock at the rear, both equipped with Ducati’s Skyhook technology for electronic adjustability.

With the exciting prospect of the Multistrada V4 Grand Tour joining the illustrious Multistrada lineup, adventure motorcycle enthusiasts have even more to look forward to in 2024.

Harley-Davidson’s foray into the 440cc platform has been a momentous event for motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide.

  • The X440 roadster, with its impressive performance and sleek design, captured the hearts of riders seeking the perfect balance between power and agility.
  • Harley-Davidson is gearing up to introduce the Nightster 440.

The Nightster name is not unfamiliar to Harley-Davidson fans, as the company already offers a larger liquid-cooled Nightster, powered by a 975cc V-twin engine derived from the Pan America’s formidable 1,250cc mill.

This bike proudly sits in Harley’s revered ‘Sport’ lineup, alongside the legendary Sportster series. Now, with the filing of a trademark for the Nightster 440 in India by Hero MotoCorp, we can’t help but speculate what this new model might bring to the table.

The Nightster 440, being the sibling of the X440, is expected to embrace a sportier personality. One key area that is likely to set it apart is the seating position. A slightly more aggressive stance could be expected, inviting riders to embrace the spirit of speed and control.

Additionally, some chassis tweaks might be in store, as early experiences with the X440 have revealed that it lacks sufficient cornering clearance. Harley-Davidson and Hero may be keen to address this to make the Nightster 440 a corner-carving delight.

The air and oil-cooled 440cc engine is anticipated to remain largely unchanged. Nevertheless, Hero might take the liberty to play around with the state-of-tune and gearing to offer a slightly more engaging experience, catering to the sportier nature of the motorcycle. This could result in heightened performance and an adrenaline-pumping ride that enthusiasts crave.

While specifics about the Nightster 440 are yet to be unveiled, it’s not too far-fetched to imagine a bike that boasts the best of both worlds. The power and finesse of the X440 combined with the sporty charm of the Nightster could make for an exhilarating package that will be hard to resist.
