Over 365,000 vehicles here in Malaysia have been fined with ‘fancy’ number plates since 2019 and the majority of these offenders were motorcycles. Out of this huge figure, 183,509 were for motorcycles that were found guilty of using vehicle registration plates that are not up to specification.
The issue on fancy number plates has been a hot topic in the past few weeks after the police force in Johor began their ‘hunt’ on offenders, including vehicles belonging to members of the several authority organizations.
This might be a small issue for some that has not been taken seriously, but the fines are anything but. For first-time offenders, guilty parties can face up to RM3,000 in fines or six months in prison or both, and for repeat offenders, it’s no more than RM4,000 and up to 12 months in lockup. That’s heavy, bruh.
For those who just bought their lovely new bikes at the shop, just keep with the standard spec registration plate design and keep that RM3,000 for a nice helmet or riding accessories. For those who are currently using these so-called ‘fancy’ plates, you might want to rethink about changing it back. No matter how rich you are, it’s not worth it.
