The series of rule changes in MotoGP continues as the Grand Prix Commission announced that it would allow factory teams to field a maximum of four riders starting next season.
Starting in 2014, the rule which limits factory squads to field a maximum of two riders set in 2012 will no longer be in effect. Currently, Honda, Yamaha, and Ducati each have two factory bikes in their own teams and contributes to two other riders in satellite teams with varying levels of support.
Honda was the last manufacturer to consistently field three riders in a season back in 2011 (Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa, and Andrea Dovisiozo). Ducati on the other hand fields two riders at present but test rider Michele Pirro has been added as a wildcard on a number of occasions this seasons.
Expect a shuffle in the 2014 MotoGP entry list thanks to this, as well as Honda and Yamaha’s efforts. Honda will introduce low-cost production racers to lure entrants from the CRT class while Yamaha have opted to offer its engines to independent teams.
