One more MotoGP race cancellation has been added to the growing list, ladies and gentlemen. FIM, IRTA, and Dorna Sports have officially announced the Gran Premio d’Italia Oakley round at the legendary Mugello circuit has been pulled out from the 2020 race calendar due to the rising concerns of COVID-19 in the country.
It’s quite a blow, especially for MotoGP fans in the area as it has been hosting MotoGP races without any issues for the past 30 years. It’s also where you’ll see thousands of adoring fans flying yellow flags to show their love and support for the hometown hero, Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi.
According to Paolo Poli, CEO of Mugello Circuit, “Despite the communal effort made to find a practical solution, the impossibility of staging an event that is open to spectators, as well as the difficulties that have arisen from this exceptional situation, have not allowed us to find a new date for the Italian Grand Prix.”
As for Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports, he stated “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of Mugello. Sadly, we were not able to find a solution to the logistical and operational issues resulting from the pandemic and rearranged calendar to enable us to visit the venue this season. It is a great loss as Mugello is one of the most beautiful circuits in the world and one we are very proud to call the home of the Italian Grand Prix.”
