‘Lesen Terbang’: Fake Malaysian driving license surfaces in Australia

A fake Malaysian driving license, complete with a B-Full class allowance for big bikes (500cc and up), has surfaced in New South Wales, Australia. It was reportedly presented by an unidentified woman who has since been convicted for the offence.

The news was published via social media through the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command – NSW Police Force Facebook page earlier today. Attached is said police service’s detailed account of the case to which it says led to the woman driver’s conviction.

According to said posting, NSW police had done checks with both INTERPOL and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to verify the validity of the license, to which it was determined as fake. NSW police had cautioned and interviewed the driver to which she admitted, “I asked someone to make it.”

The driver in question has been residing in New South Wales for the past 6 years on a current bridging visa. She was convicted at Griffith Local Court on the 13th April 2022 for the offence of Possess false document to influence exercise public duty, which entails towards a maximum jail term of 10 years.

Yes, fake IDs and licenses isn’t something new in Malaysia, but the fact that it’s so rampant to the point it is being acquired by Malaysians for use abroad should raise serious concerns.

According to this recent report by local daily FMT, fake Malaysian driving license are being advertised openly online through social media. It can cost as low as RM180 for either a GDL or PSV, RM200 for B2 or RM350 for B-Full motorcycle licenses, as well as RM450 for a D or Da class car license.

Furthermore, this report from 2018 by theSunDaily indicates that some 14,000 fake Malaysian driving license, commonly referred to as ‘Lesen Terbang’, have been identified at one point.
