Switzerland has banned motor racing since 1995 after a horrific crash at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France.
- Mercedes driver Pierre Levegh and 84 spectators were killed, and 120 more people were injured during the incident.
- Switzerland took swift action to ban racing altogether to ensure such incidents would not occur.
However, Switzerland is ready to allow motor racing again after over 60 long years.
The ban resulted from the country’s reaction to the horrific crash at the 1995 25 Hours of Le Mans, which took the life of Levegh and 84 other spectators.
Despite the ban, there were some exceptions, as hill climbs, kart races, and rallies were still allowed, including the MXGP of Switzerland.
Nevertheless, the country is set to reopen its circuits again thanks to the recent development of safety improvements made to motor racing in the past 67 years since the Levegh incident.
