The Youth and Sports Ministry of Malaysia (KBS) has finally approved the funding for our country’s Moto2 rider, Hafizh Syahrin. After getting a lifeline to continue racing with the Angel Nieto Team in the intermediate class, the young Malaysian was scrambling all over to find funding and sponsorships to chase his dream of racing in the world championship.
KBS has released an official statement regarding the matter which stated “KBS through the National Youth and Sports Department had informed Hafizh about the funding approval to cover his racing costs for 2020. The funds will be channelled through the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) as the monitoring body for motorsports development programmes in the country.”
The amount of support, however, was not mentioned and we assumed that it should be enough to cover his costs for travelling as well as training throughout the season, which has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire MotoGP 2020 might start as late as August if the COVID-19 situation improves (and that’s a big if).
With the risk of the entire 2020 championship possibly getting cancelled, teams and riders are scrambling to get things settled to ensure that they will be in proper racing conditions when 2021 comes around. Some teams have reported that they’re already in the red in terms of monetary and it might affect their racing efforts if this trend continues.
