As September 28, 2023, fast approaches, BMW Motorrad has been steadily building excitement for its upcoming release, the R 1300 GS Adventure motorcycle.

Unlike some manufacturers who keep their new models shrouded in secrecy until the last minute, BMW Motorrad has taken a different approach, already revealing the name of this highly anticipated bike.

To herald the arrival of the new BMW R 1300 GS Adventure, the Motorrad team has opted for a unique teaser strategy. Instead of cryptic silhouettes or extreme close-ups, they’ve chosen to showcase a single action shot of the bike in the midst of an adventure, sparking intrigue among motorcycle enthusiasts.

On Facebook, the caption invites readers to “Set the pace with the all-new BMW #R1300GS?” followed by the curious eyeballs emoji. It promises more updates on the unveiling, reminding everyone to stay tuned for the big reveal on September 28th at 5 PM CEST, using the hashtag #ThePacesetter.

The teaser image, while shrouded in a splash of water, provides a subtle glimpse of what’s to come. Enthusiasts with a keen eye might spot the signature wire-spoke wheels and dual brake discs that are a hallmark of GS motorcycles. Some observant commenters on social media have even suggested that the front end appears slightly slimmer compared to the previous R 1250 GS, although it’s challenging to gauge proportions accurately due to the surrounding water in the photo.

With just a few more days to go until the grand unveiling, the motorcycling community eagerly anticipates the official debut of the BMW R 1300 GS Adventure and the adventures it promises to bring. Stay tuned for more updates and details on this exciting release.

Ducati proudly introduced the latest addition to its Multistrada family: the 2024 Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour. This highly anticipated release promises to cater to the demands and desires of avid touring riders, offering a wealth of standard features tailored to their needs.

  • the 2024 Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour is the second motorcycle to feature at this year’s Ducati World Premiere.
  • powering the Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour is the Grandturismo V4 engine that pumps 170hp and 125Nm.

At the core of the 2024 Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour lies the robust 1,158cc V4 Granturismo engine, delivering a claimed 170hp and 125Nm of torque.

Notably, this powertrain has been engineered with an emphasis on the convenience of long-distance touring, boasting extended maintenance intervals. Ducati recommends oil changes for this engine every two years or after covering 15,000 kilometers with valve clearance checks suggested at the 60,000-kilometer mark.

This touring marvel comes equipped with four distinct ride modes: Sport, Touring, Enduro, and Urban. Sport and Touring modes provide access to the full spectrum of the V4 GT’s power, while Enduro and Urban modes adjust the output to a more manageable 112.6hp to suit varying riding conditions.

Setting a new standard for functionality and touring comfort, the 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour arrives from the factory with Travel and Radar packages pre-installed.

Notably, this motorcycle features Ducati’s adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring as standard, along with the Skyhook semi-active suspension system. Additionally, the Minimum Preload and Easy Lift functions are included to enhance the overall riding experience.

In a bid to enhance practicality further, the 2024 Ducati Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour incorporates a range of standard features, including an adjustable windscreen, handguards, auxiliary LED lighting, a tire pressure monitoring system, heated handgrips, and heated saddles for both the rider and passenger.

Furthermore, convenience is heightened with a hands-free opening gas cap, a center stand, and matching side cases, ensuring riders have ample space to stow their gear for extended journeys. The inclusion of a center stand is particularly noteworthy, simplifying routine maintenance tasks that riders may encounter during lengthy excursions, such as chain maintenance.

Ducati has not forgotten shorter riders, as they have made provisions for a factory low suspension kit, which can be optionally added to the Multistrada V4 S Grand Tour at an additional cost.

In an era marked by the anticipation of the internal combustion engine’s demise, Italian manufacturer Piaggio is breaking new ground in engine development.

  • Despite the ongoing shift towards electric power, Piaggio is focusing on enhancing the efficiency of small, low-cost engines for scooters.
  • The company’s latest innovation is a Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system designed specifically for these engines.

Piaggio’s VVT system, outlined in a detailed patent application, aims to optimise the intake timing on single-cylinder, single-overhead-camshaft engines used in scooters. Given the tight profit margins in this segment of the market, the design emphasises simplicity and reduced component count.

At first glance, Piaggio’s SOHC VVT system appears similar to Yamaha’s “VVA” (Variable Valve Actuation) design used in various motorcycles. However, a subtle yet crucial difference sets Piaggio’s system apart.

Both systems employ two profiles for the intake cam lobes, which act on a forked rocker arm to control two intake valves. Like Yamaha’s VVA, Piaggio’s system uses a pin to connect or disconnect the rocker arm, with an actuator to engage it and a spring to disengage it when not needed.

The key distinction lies in the number of elements in the rocker arm. Yamaha’s VVA system features two parts: one conventional rocker and one element for high-lift, long-duration cam lobes. In contrast, Piaggio’s design incorporates three elements in its rocker arm, allowing for more comprehensive control over valve timing, lift, and duration.

This innovation enables the Piaggio system to adjust not only valve lift but also timing, offering a distinct advantage over Yamaha’s system, which can only switch between low-lift, short-duration and high-lift, long-duration lobes. With Piaggio’s design, the high-rpm cam lobe can have different timing, enhancing engine performance at high revs.

The patent showcases this system on an engine that resembles the Vespa GTS 300, utilised in various Piaggio models, including the Piaggio MP3. Piaggio’s commitment to improving small-engine efficiency reflects its dedication to innovation in an ever-evolving industry.
