Remember the Bimota KB998 WorldSBK racebike? We have said earlier that manufacturers need to produce a certain number of roadgoing bikes to homologate it for racing in the series, examples being the BMW M 1000 RR, Ducati Panigale V4 R, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10RR, etc. So yes, the 2025 Bimota KB998 Rimini road bike was launched at EICMA 2024.

As with the previous Bimota motorcycles where the company makes the frames and uses contemporary engines, the KB998 uses the Kawasaki ZX-10R’s inline-four engine and wrapped in a Bimota frame.

The frame here is called a “hybrid design” as it combines a tubular frame from the headstock and mated to a CNC-machined from billet sideplates. Capping the headstock are billet aluminium triple clamps that also clamp fully-adjustable Showa forks.

Brakes are by Brembo, of course, fed cooling air through a beautiful carbon fibre duct which is part of the front mudguard. The TFT screen is shared with the ZX-10.

Unfortunately, Bimota and Kawasaki did not indulge in further details of the 2025 Bimota KB998 Rimini such as engine performance, weight, price, etc.

The bike will be ridden by Alex Lowes and Axel Bassani in the 2025 World Superbike Championship. The team, called Bimota by Kawasaki Racing Team (BbKRT) consists of the staff members of the previous KRT.

Apart from the 2024 MODENAS Versys 650 SE, the 2024 Kawasaki Z900RS SE has also been launched in Malaysia.

The Kawasaki Z900RS SE is a captivating blend of timeless styling and modern engineering. Paying homage to the iconic Z1, this motorcycle captures the spirit of old-school bikes while seamlessly integrating contemporary features.

Notably, it features an Öhlins S46 rear shock—a hallmark of quality construction—that enhances grip and contributes to a suppler ride feel. The front suspension has been fine-tuned to complement the new rear shock, and a remote preload adjuster allows easy customisation for tandem riding or luggage. Eye- catching gold-coloured fork outer tubes match the Öhlins rear shock, adding to the bike’s allure.

And when it comes to stopping power, the Z900RS SE does n0t disappoint: it boasts 300mm Brembo front discs and M4.32 radial-mount monobloc calipers. Whether you appreciate heritage or crave performance, the Z900RS SE is a standout choice for riders who seek authenticity and excellence on the road.

The 2024 Z900RS SE is available in Metallic Flat Spark Black/Metallic Matte Carbon Gray. Recommended retail selling price is RM73,300.

This article was probably best-timed for the first Top Gun film which came out in 1986, but hey, the internet was not born yet. But this author had just rewatched the film (for the millionth time) and felt compelled to write about the original Top Gun bike: Kawasaki GPZ900R Ninja.

Here are 5 interesting stuff you may not know about.

1. 6-year Top Secret Project

Kawasaki needed a bike to succeed the successful and iconic Z1. They needed something that is more powerful than what everyone else had in the market, as well as introduce a fresh design. The motorcycle world had headed into the early 80s by then, which was a decade of excess. Everything had to be more powerful and faster, and on top of that, with groundbreaking design.

Kawasaki worked on the bike over and over. No spyshots existed, especially since there was no internet back then. It stayed in secret better than the Darkstar aircraft.

Finally, it was released in 1984 to global acclaim.

2. The first Ninja

The GPZ900R was the first of Kawasaki’s bikes to wear the “Ninja” name to signify its handling and speed. Since then, all Kawasaki faired sportbikes and even sport-tourers from the ZX-250, to the nighty H2R utilised and utilises the Ninja designation.

3. The first DOHC 16-valve production bike

The engine followed the Z1’s 900cc capacity but it was given a DOHC 16-valve head – the first for a production motorcycle. It had liquid-cooling, too, but it was not the first bike to incorporate that feature.

The new features gave the engine a 115hp peak power output and took the bike to a 243 km/h top speed. That in turn earned the GPz900R Ninja the world’s fastest production bike title and laying down the gauntlet for other manufacturers to beat.

4. Tom Cruise wanted it in Top Gun

Ever noticed that Tom Cruise rides a bike in almost every movie of his? He had been a biker even before Top Gun and the Mission: Impossible series became famous. He knew about the GPZ900R and convinced the producers to include it in the movie which came out 2 years after the bike’s introduction.

5. Produced until 2003

The bike was so successful that it was produced until 1996 for the global market, but production kept going until 2003 for the Japanese market. That was a 17-year production run. Many classic bike aficionados are still seeking the bike.

Closing

The new Top Gun: Maverick movie had Maverick riding the Kawasaki Ninja H2, which is all good since it a continuation of the original Ninja and as the world’s fastest production motorcycle. But you just cannot take away the original Ninja’s clout, just like the first Top Gun movie.

Edaran Modenas Sdn Bhd (EMOS), a subsidiary of Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (MODENAS), and distributor of Kawasaki bikes in Malaysia, has launched fresh designs for the Kawasaki Z900 ABS, Kawasaki Z900 SE, offering Malaysian riders a wider array of options.

For starters, the Z900 SE is now available in two new colours – Metallic Spark Black and Metallic Matte Graphenesteel Gray. This is priced at RM55,900.

The refreshed 2024 Kawasaki KLX230 S and KLX230SM ABS have arrived with updates that include new paintjobs, graphics, LEDs and even a suspension overhaul. Both bikes are updated by the same 233cc, four-stroke, single-cylinder engine and the same six-speed gearbox. But there is quite a bit that is different underneath the two bikes.  We break it down for you:

2024 Kawasaki KLX230 S

In terms of suspension, the KLX230 S gets a 37mm telescopic front fork with 7.8-inches of suspension travel, complemented by a rear Uni-Trak linkage offering 8.9-inches of travel at the back with preload adjustability. Kawasaki reports that the revised aluminium swingarm sheds about 1.2 kilograms compared to the previous generation swingarm.

The 2024 KLX230 S rolls on a 20-inch front and a 18-inch rear wheel. It’s available in both ABS and non-ABS variants, featuring petal disc brakes at the front and rear. The brakes vary slightly between the ABS and non-ABS versions, with the ABS model sporting a 265-millimeter front brake disc and the non-ABS model equipped with a 240-millimeter front brake disc instead. In both cases, a 220-millimeter rear brake disc gets the job done.

The seat height is a more accessible 33-inches. The curb weight stands at 133 kilograms. LCD instrumentation and smartphone connectivity via Kawasaki’s Rideology The App are standard on this motorcycle.

2024 Kawasaki KLX230 SM

The 2024 Kawasaki KLX230 SM benefits from the same engine, ergonomics, and subframe modifications as the 2024 KLX230 S but adds a more supermoto-oriented character to the mix.

Instead of the 20-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels found on the KLX230 S, the 2024 Kawasaki KLX230 SM boasts a pair of 17-inch wheels at both ends. As for brakes, a 300mm semi-floating petal front disc handles braking up front, while a single 220-inch rear disc takes care of things at the rear.

Suspension-wise, riders get an inverted 37-millimeter front fork, as well as the Uni-Trak rear linkage also present on the KLX230 S. Spring settings are slightly firmer to accommodate the road-biased nature of this machine. Similarly, the footpegs on the SM feature rubber pads to reflect their street orientation.

A new LED headlight, a two-toned and flattened-out saddle, and a redesigned tank/shroud/cowl unit complete the KLX230 SM package for 2024.

Kawasaki markets its motorcycles in multiple regions worldwide. Consequently, pricing and availability may vary depending on location, but for Malaysians, prices may be expensive due to the falling value of the ringgit.

The KLX230 S for example is priced at RM23,620 while the KLX230 S ABS is priced at RM25,032. The KLX230 SM though is priced at RM26,500.

However, expect these prices to change should these bikes hit the Malaysian market. Since Kawasaki bikes are assembled and distributed by Modenas which means those prices could be lower. If the Ringgit does not fall further that is.
