Lets be honest here, how many of us really do care about the molecular properties of the petrol we use? Most of us are driven by the price of fuel and as such would simply use the cheaper RON 95. Every once in a while though there are some who will fill up on the more expensive RON97 or even Shell’s V-Power Racing under the false assumption that it “cleans up” the engine.

Yes that is a false belief because it is not the fuel that cleans the engine but the lubricant. What is true though is that most Malaysians are a price sensitive bunch, so the cheaper the better. But is cheaper always better though?

Petron recently invited us for a near 1000km ride to Penang and back via some selected stops to try out their Blaze 100 fuel. The only catch? We needed to bring our own bikes or bikes we were familiar with, and the tank must be close to empty on the morning meet at the Petron station along the MRR2 near Selayang.

I didn’t want to ride any of my bikes because one has a puny 8 litre tank and the other is shod with Pirelli Super Corsa tyres which would have been a nightmare or worse in the rain. So I borrowed a bike which I had already rode a couple times and understood its character – the Triumph Tiger XCx.

Tall and comfortable with a sweet three-cylinder engine, and cruise control too, the XCx is said to be one of the best dual-purpose bikes in the business. And the best part about the bike is most probably the engine. The 800cc, triple-cylinder engine is rich in torque and loves to rev, pulling away from tailgating cars on the highway was as simple as twisting the throttle, no downshifts necessary. Sometimes. The only drawback was that the engine tends to be thirsty if you cruise at a constant 150-160km/h. But then again, you really shouldn’t be cruising at that speed.

“We hope you enjoy the ride and feel the difference that the RON 100 fuel has to offer,” said one of the Petron representatives right before the flag off.

We hit the road at about 915am, with a tank full of Petron Blaze 100 (as it is officially called) super fuel, riding towards the Tapah R&R which was about 150km from where we were.

Petron’s Blaze 100 fuel is supposed to give your bike more power as it uses a special formula that gives it an edge over the rest – it’s called the “Tri-Action Advantage Formula”.

This formula sounds like your typical marketing lingo to lure you into believing that this fuel is better than the rest. But it is more than just marketing fluff, there is actually a scientific explanation to it.

The formula promises “better power, better engine protection and better mileage” and it meets this promise by using a molecular detergent that cleans and keeps clean a dirty engine. Don’t mistake this for the detergent that you use to clean your clothes though, it is actually a molecule that keeps your fuel line clean so petrol can flow smoothly and uninterrupted. However it does not clean the internals of your engine like a good lubricant does, it simply smoothens out the fuel line so fuel flows without any particles slowing it down.

Then there is a “Friction Modifier” that reduces friction inside the piston chamber to ensure that the pistons work as they should without any particles slowing them down. And finally there is the “Combustion Enhancer”, this is the part that gives you power because it basically ensures that every molecule of fuel in the piston chamber is burnt in its entirety so that there is no wastage. And when a fuel is more combustible, the burst of energy it creates will in turn work the piston harder, and give you more power.

So that is the basics of Petron’s RON 100 fuel, in fact the company’s own studies have shown that the RON 100 fuel gives 6.3% improvement in power, and 2.95% improvement in torque. This study was conducted on cars in the UK but is relevant to motorcycles too. A further UK based study showed a 3.7% improvement in acceleration time, a 2% improvement in top speed, and a dyno test showed a 2.9% improvement in acceleration rate.

But did I feel the difference as soon as I got on the bike? Nope.

We filled up our tanks about six times throughout the journey to Penang and back. And though it was a requirement to ride according to the speed limit, well, I’ll just let you assume the best of us.

But according to the technical briefing during dinner later at night, a biker will need to fill up his tank up to eight times (!) before truly feeling the awesomeness of the RON 100 fuel. That is because the old fuel will need to be flushed out of the system, and it takes time for the micro particles to settle into the engine to truly make a difference. So filling up eight times before a difference is truly felt is a safe figure.

However, I will admit to something – that the bike felt lighter, more willing to rev, more ‘torquey’, and to sum it all up, more powerful on the return leg.

Of course some will say that “feel” is subjective and others may or may not feel the same, but in all honesty the bike felt more eager to accelerate. And there were instances where idiotic bus drivers would suddenly barge into the fast lane without signalling, seemingly unaware of the motorcyclist fast approaching. Well, hard braking is usually accompanied by quick downshifting and accelerating out of the danger zone (and maybe a choice finger for the bus driver, maybe) but shifting from sixth to fifth instead of fourth did the trick this time, and the bike seemed quite happy to lay down power.

Simply put, there is no denying that the higher the RON of a particular fuel, the more combustible it is and ultimately more powerful. Petron’s RON 100 is currently the most powerful fuel in Malaysia, even more so than Shell’s V-Power Racing which is said to be RON 98. But it is also the most expensive at RM3 a litre. But for superbikes and their regular tank size, the price to pay for such impressive fuel is, well, negligible. Try it but don’t expect to feel the difference right away!

As we head closer to the end of the 2017 MotoGP season, the penultimate round that is the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix is sure to bring in a lot of excitement for all those who attend. Having gained status as one of the most challenging circuits in the calendar, the Sepang International Circuit is always ready to throw one heck of a curve ball with the unpredictable weather.

The race is made even more exciting with the fact that more often than not, a champion emerges in the final flyaway race. Take last year for example when the current Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Johann Zarco won his second Moto2 championship before graduating to MotoGP for 2017.

No motorcycle extravaganza can be complete without some premium bikes being displayed. There are so many motorcycle manufacturers taking part that they themselves are already their own shows! It’s already an experience to visit all the booths before entering the grandstands.

The brands that are taking part in the races proudly displayed their prized and rare bikes which you only get to see on the Internet or TV. Not at the Malaysian MotoGP round 2017, folks. Take KTM for example where the main attraction is a lovely KTM RC16 replica race machine.

We were fortunate enough to be able to visit the IDEMITSU Honda Team Asia and also Team SUZUKI ECSTAR to witness the behind-the-scenes action and harmony between riders and other team members.

Want to spend some money on special merchandises? The Petronas booth for example took it up another notch with a few great performances from famous artists such as Altimet. Fans were entertained with the best of the best while purchasing top of the line merchandises, getting signatures from our Moto2 star rider Hafizh Syahrin and even a very unique ‘multiple angle’ photo booth.

At the end of the day, it’s all about the races. While Moto3 has already found their champion for 2017 that is Joan Mir of Leopard Racing (CLICK HERE to read the story), the Moto2 and MotoGP crowns are still up for grabs. The battles are now left between Franco Morbidelli EG (0,0 Marc VDS) and Tom Luthi (CarXpert Interwetten) in Moto2 and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) in MotoGP.

Will there be a champion at the end of Sunday? Come early because things are about to blow up. Moto3 will start at 12pm followed by Moto2 at 1.20pm and MotoGP at 3pm (local times). Don’t feel too bad if your riders don’t make it to the podium because all the booths prepped at the Mall Area are always ready to cheer you right back up before heading back home.

It’s that time of the year again when thousands of people descend upon the Sepang International Circuit for the only MotoGP race in this part of the world, for now – the Shell Malaysia MotoGP round.

And as we have witnessed for the last 10 years, Kawasaki will have a mighty presence once again in the form of a motorcycle convoy consisting of hundreds of motorcycles, and a massive exhibition booth.

The exhibition booth will have on display the full Kawasaki range of models including the Ninja ZX-10R WSBK Replica which won the World Superbike Championship in 2013, 2015 and in 2016. There will also be the Ninja ZX-10RR, the base model which recently won the 2017 World Superbike Championship and the Supercharged ‘Built Beyond Belief’ Kawasaki Ninja H2 and H2R.

And then on Sunday the 29th of October, Kawasaki’s iconic MotoGP Convoy featuring more than 300 Kawasaki bikers will head to the circuit to watch the MotoGP race. The convoy will first congregate at the Padang Merbok in Jalan Parlimen, Kuala Lumpur where Dato Jeffrey Lim, General Manager & Director of KMSB will officially flag off the convoy.

Kawasaki always puts on a grand show at the convoy and at their booth, and this year they will have Nestle Son Bhd serving coffee at the Kawasaki Coffee Break stand, and Tokio Marine Insurance will also be on hand to advise bikers on their products and services.

  • Shell Advance Ultra with PurePlus Technology is a fully-synthetic motor oil

  • The lubricant is formulated to last up to 12,000 kilometres

  • Engine is now smoother, faster-revving and has gained extra RPMs

We’ve covered Shell Advance Ultra with Pureplus’ origins in a previous article (click here to read more). I’ve been using this lubricant in my 2011 Kawasaki ER-6f since May of this year.

There were two grades to choose from at that particular time: 10W-40 and 10W-50. The former grade is recommended by Kawasaki as the primary choice, while the second is recommended by the manufacturer for countries with high ambient temperatures.

While the second grade would’ve been perfect, I decided to go ahead with the 10W-40 choice just to test how it would fare, since it’s the primary choice.

During the pour, the oil was a very clear, almost golden yellow. That’s due to the PurePlus Technology. Shell’s PurePlus Technology results from Shell’s gas-to-liquid crystal-clear base oil which is virtually free from impurities such as sulfur, mercaptans, mecury, nitrogen, aromatics (click here to read more).

The real difference, of course, was what happened when the engine was started and running. The Shell Advance Ultra’s effect was immediate. The ER-6 range is well-known for its loud ticking sound emanating from the cylinder head, but with the Shell lubricant, the sound was reduced significantly at idle. The sound totally disappeared when the helmet went on and riding.

Engine response was quick, even when the oil was new. (A new oil is still more viscous or “thicker,” compared to older oil.) More importantly, the engine didn’t feel stressed when accelerating hard through the gears and had no qualms about holding high RPMs for extended periods.

Additionally, there’s a 300 RPM drop when cruising at all speeds. Lower revs equate to lower fuel consumption.

The oil has since covered 3000km. I’ll be honest here: The biggest complaint heard in the market about most, if not all oils, is their inability to hold its grade and performance throughout its lifespan. Most bikers change their oils every 5000km, regardless if they used fully-synthetic or semi-synthetic lubricants. In their opinion, lubricants would experience a performance drop by the time it hits the 2500km to 3000km mark.

Now, I’ve used almost every oil available in the market, even some that aren’t; and I can happily report that the Shell Advance Ultra with PurePlus has not a dropped in its performance thus far. The ticking in my bike’s valvetrain is still soft, the engine still revs willingly, and the 300 RPM reduction is still present. That has made riding a hoot especially in the city as overtaking is easy – a quick blast of the throttle is all that’s needed.

Of course, the oil has changed colour, but extracting some of it out of the engine revealed that it is still reddish brown instead of being totally black or worse, grayish black. I’m positive that should be credited to the PurePlus technology, since it started out free from impurities (click here for more info).

Shell has iterated that the Advance Ultra with PurePlus technology is formulated to be long-lasting. Because of that, its official service life is at 12000km for Ducatis. While different engines “use” their lubricants differently, if so, it means the oil in my engine has covered only at 25% of its lifespan.

A further report at 6000km is forthcoming from our test and I shall push it to the 12000km cycle. But at this moment, the Shell Advance Ultra with PurePlus has already surpassed my expectations.

Shell’s Advance Ultra with PurePlus Technology signifies a new breed of lubricants. But although lubricants may be slippery as they need to be, but it’s always a sticky subject amongst discerning motorcyclists. Truth is, there exists misconceptions, myths, half-truths and truths surrounding the subject of lubricants. We hope to put things right with this series of articles on the subject of lubricants.

Shell launched their new line of fully synthetic lubricants called Shell Advance Ultra with PurePlus Technology in 2014. What makes the new range interesting is the groundbreaking PurePlus technology. (Click here for our coverage of the launch and preview.)

The term “PurePlus” is derived crystal-clear base oil that’s more than 99% free from impurities, resulting from the process which created it.

Traditionally, a base oil is the resulting product of refining or synthesising crude oil or other hydrocarbon sources. The lubricant producer then adds their additive package to yield the desired properties of the end-product. But while the additives play the biggest role in determining the level of protection and longevity of a lubricant, the base oil plays a big role too.

How crude oil look like

Shell’s PurePlus base oil is derived from natural gas (the cleanest burning fossil fuel), through a process called gas-to-liquids (GTL). The GTL process produces a base oil that is closer to the end-product, without requiring to be refined further.

The first step in a GTL process is to convert the natural gas into syngas (synthetic gas). The syngas is then processed to remove harmful impurities such as sulfur, mercaptans, mecury, nitrogen, aromatics, resulting in a base oil that’s crystal clear and feels like wax at room temperature.

Having impurities in the base oil is undesirable as it may contribute to the oil breaking down quickly and even to engine wear and tear if taken past its oil change period. See how oils decades ago turn into sludge that gunks up the engine? Also, in the case of the oil being burned in the combustion chamber due to leaky piston rings or/and valve seal, the emission doesn’t harm the environment as much.

Check out this video below. Although it’s for the Helix Ultra, it’s also the result of Shell’s PurePlus Technology.

In other words, the base oil and additive package play important roles in ensuring a lubricant that fully protects your engine. A weak link on either side is a compromise.

Anyway, Shell then combines their proprietary Active Cleansing additives to the base oil to produce a clean, 100% fully-synthetic lubricant. These additives protect the engine by cleaning the engine of dirt, corrosion, sludge and byproducts of the combustion process such as carbon, water, sulfur from the fuel (which becomes sulfuric acid), among many others.

These are all important, even critical, aspects of motorcycle engine protection. Motorcycle engines have smaller capacities compared to the cars, but produce much higher power output. Consequently, motorcycle engines produce higher heat and forces.

An engine full of sludge

Shell’s aim for the Shell Advance Ultra with PurePlus Technology is to help maintain longer engine peak power through enhanced oil viscosity, maintaining oil performance not only in extreme temperatures but also in low temperatures. Oil needs to flow quickly during and immediately after start-up.

As for durability, Shell Advance Ultra with PurePlus Technology is claimed to last twice as long as other oils.

The GTL process has been in constant development for more than 40 years at the Shell Technology Center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Shell built a pilot plant in Amsterdam in 1983 to study the feasibility of the GTL process further, before opening the first GTL plant in Bintulu, Sarawak in 1993. The Bintulu plant produces 14,700 barrels per day. 2011 saw the opening of the massive Pearl GTL plant in Qatar, which produces 140,000 barrels per day.
